Heinz has been a member of the cantonal government of Zug since 2007. From 2007 to 2015 he served as Director of Construction and since 2016 as Finance Director of the Canton. Between 1995-2003, Heinz was a member of the Zug Cantonal Council as well as President of the Hospital Commission and a member of the State Economic Commission. From 2004 to 2006, the trained lawyer worked as director of the legal department and member of the executive board of the World Football Association (FIFA) and from 1995 to 2003 as an individual judge of the Swiss Ice Hockey Federation.
